To all new members:

My name is Master James Marr and I own Glen Ridge TaeKwonDo in Montclair, NJ. When I opened in January of 2002, I believed that good teaching alone would make my school a success. I thought quality would sell itself, and for three years my school enjoyed moderate success. Then I met Master KO Spillmann at the first annual meeting of TaeKwonDo International. His seminar on the sales and business tactics of running a martial arts school changed the way I approached my business, from answering the first phone call to talking to students before and after class. Since then, the number of students at my school has nearly tripled. We have moved to a larger facility, with plans to expand again. We teach 7 classes a day, and the students are happier and more dedicated than ever before. Master Spillmann never recommended that I compromise the integrity of my teaching; if he had, as so many other programs do (with the philosophy that you should teach nothing until the student pays for years in advance), I would have walked away. I sat with him several years ago after teaching at several of his ATC training camps and asked him about his success and his philosophy was something I never heard of in my style, it was enlightening and I took his ideas to Brazil.

I took these ideas to Brazil and had several friends laugh at me, telling me these methods would not work in Brazil that it was a different place, well I showed them they were wrong now they want me to teach them Master Spillmann’s methods of building a school and making a professional income from teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In my eyes Master Spillmann has changed the way we do business in my academy, his teaching methods, ideas and positive philosophy has helped my school grow from 40 students to over 300 members and 3 branch locations in Sao Paulo Brazil. I have learned to adjust my schedules, curriculums, training and methodology without compromising my students training or style.
